Itchy Rash Under the Breasts: What You Can Do Today When Your Doctor Isn’t Available
An itchy, red rash under the breasts can be surprisingly uncomfortable. It may sting, burn, feel tender, or become worse when you sweat. And when it keeps returning, it is natural to wonder what is causing it and what you can safely do until you are able to speak with a healthcare professional.
The important thing to know is that a rash in this area can have several causes. A photograph alone cannot reliably tell you which one you have. However, there are some simple steps that can help protect irritated skin and reduce moisture while you arrange appropriate medical care.
Why Does a Rash Develop Under the Breasts?
The fold beneath the breasts creates an environment where skin rests against skin. Heat, moisture, perspiration, and friction can become trapped there.
One common problem in skin folds is intertrigo. This is inflammation caused or aggravated by moisture and friction. The skin may become red, sore, itchy, or irritated.
Sometimes yeast or bacteria can also grow in already irritated, damp skin. Other possibilities include eczema, contact dermatitis from soaps or laundry products, psoriasis, or another skin condition.
That is why repeatedly treating every rash as a fungal infection without knowing the cause is not ideal.
Why Can It Keep Coming Back?
Recurring irritation often means that one or more triggers are still present.
Sweating, tight clothing, inadequate airflow, damp skin after bathing, exercise, and friction can all contribute. Some people also notice problems after changing detergents, fragrances, lotions, fabrics, or personal-care products.
