Garlic in Your Ear: Does This Popular Home Remedy Really Work?

Garlic has been used in traditional remedies for generations. It is often praised for its natural compounds and potential antimicrobial properties, which has led to many home remedies involving garlic.

One of the more unusual claims circulating online is that putting garlic in or around the ear can relieve ear pain or treat an ear infection.

But does this popular remedy actually work?

The answer is more complicated than social media posts often suggest.

Why Do People Use Garlic for Ear Problems?

Garlic contains compounds that have demonstrated antimicrobial activity in laboratory research. Because of this, some people believe that placing garlic directly into the ear could help fight the bacteria responsible for an ear infection.

However, laboratory evidence about garlic’s antimicrobial properties is not the same thing as evidence that putting raw garlic inside the ear is a safe or effective treatment.

An ear infection can occur in different parts of the ear, and the appropriate treatment depends on its cause and location.

Putting Raw Garlic Inside the Ear Is Not Recommended

Although garlic may be perfectly safe as part of a normal diet, that doesn’t mean a raw garlic clove belongs inside the ear canal.

The delicate skin inside the ear can become irritated by substances that would normally be harmless when eaten.

Medical experts specifically advise against relying on garlic or other oils placed inside the ear to treat an infection. These substances may not reach the actual source of an infection, particularly when the problem is located behind the eardrum.

There is another important concern: you may not know whether your eardrum is intact.
