Each variation uses one standard 8-ounce container of thawed frozen whipped topping. If you want to prepare all five flavours, you will need five containers.
Thaw the frozen whipped topping in the refrigerator according to the package directions. Do not leave it on the counter for several hours to speed up thawing.
It should be soft enough to fold but still cold and structured. If it becomes warm and runny, the finished dessert will not hold its texture as well.
Cream cheese
Use full-fat block-style cream cheese for the coconut, lemon, and raspberry variations. Tub-style cream cheese may produce a softer dessert.
Allow the cream cheese to soften enough to mix smoothly, but do not leave it at room temperature beyond normal food-safety limits.
Peanut butter
Conventional creamy peanut butter gives the most predictable consistency. Natural peanut butter can separate and may create a looser dessert unless it is mixed extremely well.
Caramel sauce
Choose a thick caramel sauce rather than a very thin syrup. Thin caramel can make the whipped topping runny.
Lemon curd
Lemon curd provides a concentrated lemon flavour and creamy texture. Both homemade and commercial lemon curd work, provided the product has been stored safely.
Raspberry preserves
Seedless preserves create a smoother swirl. Raspberry jam with seeds can also be used if you prefer more texture.
Toasted coconut
Toasting the coconut adds deeper flavour and a slightly crisp texture. Let it cool completely before folding it into the cold whipped topping.
Basic Technique for Cool Whip Desserts
Although the flavours are different, the mixing method is similar for all five.
Step 1: Thaw the whipped topping
Move the frozen whipped topping from the freezer to the refrigerator and thaw it according to the package directions.
Keep it refrigerated until you are ready to mix the dessert.
Step 2: Prepare the flavour base
If the variation contains cream cheese, peanut butter, lemon curd, caramel, or chocolate spread, combine those ingredients in a separate bowl first.
Mix until smooth before adding the whipped topping. This prevents dense lumps and reduces the amount of stirring required later.
Step 3: Fold in the whipped topping
Add approximately one-third of the whipped topping to the flavour base. Stir gently to lighten the mixture.
Add the remaining whipped topping and fold with a silicone spatula. Use broad, gentle movements rather than vigorous beating.
Overmixing can deflate the whipped texture.
Prepare each flavour base separately before gently folding in the cold whipped topping.
Step 4: Add crunchy ingredients last
Chocolate pieces, peanuts, toasted coconut, crushed crackers, and cookie crumbs should be added near the end.
Reserve a small quantity for decorating the top before serving.
Step 5: Chill before serving
Transfer the dessert to a serving bowl, cover it, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Chilling helps the flavours blend and gives the mixture a firmer, more scoopable texture.
